Betty's Story
"The challenge of playing detective arose as a new and stimulating challenge for me," she said. "I am proud to know that I have had a small part in improving the health of the individuals I served." McGuire's love for working with people who have developmental disabilities began years ago when she was the director of nursing at a skilled nursing facility. At that time, there were no community options for people with developmental disabilities and they often became residents of long-term skilled nursing centers or state institutions. Her first job specifically working in the field came during the time when disabilities services began the transition to community-based homes and supports. McGuire graduated from Augustana College of Nursing, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing after achieving her registered nurse status while working in the emergency room on the night shift and going to college during the day. She has continued her studies and earned a Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies in nursing administration. McGuire holds active RN licenses in good-standing in three states: Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. She is also one of seven American Heart Association certified instructors in the state of Michigan to teach Braille CPR to people who are blind. A large part of McGuire's success in working with people with disabilities comes from her approach. She treats every patient with respect and courtesy, noting that people with disabilities can recognize insincerity and disrespect. "I am never condescending or angry in my interaction, and always respect each person as an individual," she said. McGuire hails from Benton Harbor, Mich., and has been living in South Bend, Ind., for nine years. She remembers visiting Bethphage (now Mosaic at Bethphage Village) in Axtell, Neb. as a child. Her mother's aunt worked there providing assistance to people with developmental disabilities or health problems. Today, McGuire works as a nurse for Mosaic. "Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would work for the same company years later," McGuire said. "The path of destiny works in mysterious ways. I also appreciate the flexibility of hours and working during the day." |
Angie's StoryI love working as a nurse at Mosaic because I work with a great team who truly support our clients. I feel very supported and appreciated, which truly makes a difference in terms of morale. The support has helped boost my confidence as a nurse and in day-to-day life. I have a background in human services prior to nursing and the collaboration works very well for me. Nursing can take you to so many areas besides a hospital or clinic! I work with 24 individuals in the ICF/MR designation. It's great for me because not only a nurse, but I have also been able to get to know my clients (and guardians) very well. I'll often go on outings and birthday parties. It is a challenge for health care providers in the community to assess a client who may be unable to give a health history, afraid, and unable to speak up for themselves. As a client advocate, I can give the doctor important information and ensure the client will receive the care that is right for them. Unintentionally, client appointments provide excellent networking opportunities and helps boost community awareness of special needs. I also appreciate the flexibility of hours and working during the day. | |||||
