Mosaic in Des Moines celebrated
National Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
by donating a van to a family with teenagers who have intellectual
and physical disabilities. Because of its age and mileage, the van
could no longer be used to transport people served by Mosaic, even
though its overall condition was good. When Mosaic Property Manager
Mike Knode learned of the family's need, he suggested donating the
vehicle instead of selling it for salvage. Knode then secured in-kind
donations of nearly $8,000 in labor and materials to get the van in
top shape. The work included a tune-up, new tires, paint, wheelchair
lift repairs and more.
This project was a perfect example
of how a small idea can become a reality when people come together to
help one another," said Carol Mau, Executive Director of Mosaic in
Des Moines. "Not only was it a great opportunity to spark community
connections and provide opportunities to give back, but also raised
the awareness level of the needs of people with disabilities."
