Trenton Gomaz made his television singing debut before an estimated 12 million viewers, singing with Darius Rucker and others at the Academy of Country Music Awards April 3 in Las Vegas. Gomaz, who receives services from Mosaic in Coffeyville (Kansas) called the opportunity "awesome" as he talked of meeting Rucker, Steven Tyler and other stars.
The song they did, "Music From the Heart," was written with the assistance of Gomaz and others who attended the ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp hosted by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center in Nashville, Tenn. Gomaz has attended the camp for five years.
"My favorite experience was doing the song with Darius Rucker," Gomaz said. "It makes me feel happy because it makes me feel like I'm in a new life."
Gomaz has Williams syndrome, which among other symptoms includes a friendly, trusting per-sonality and an interest in music. His mother, Deb Toyes, has exposed her son to many styles of music and he enjoys them all.
"We've never considered it a disability," Toyes said. "A lot of people envy him because he is always happy."
