Mourning with the Disability Community in Japan

A candle in the darkness next the text: "Out of the darkness we cry to you, O God. Enable us to find in Christ the faith to trust your care even in the midst of pain. Surround the community in Japan with your steadfast love. Assure us that we do not walk alone through the valley of the shadow, but that your light is leading us into life. In your name we pray, Amen."

Yesterday, news reports came out of an attack on a care facility for people with disabilities in Japan that left 19 people dead and 26 more injured. For people with disabilities, their families and friends, as well as the professionals who support them around the world, it is a deeply painful story to watch unfold.

Our prayers and condolences go out to the residents, staff and loved ones at the Tsukui Yamayuri En (Tsukui Lily Garden) facility.

The attacker’s alleged motive of euthanizing people with disabilities is horrifying. Violence against people with disabilities is something that seems shocking and senseless, but continues to happen because of misguided conceptions about the value of the lives of people with disabilities, especially those who require long-term care and support.

People and children with disabilities, especially those with intellectual disabilities, are disproportionately vulnerable to violence compared to their peers without disabilities. (World Health Organization)

Through the work of thousands of people across the United States and around the world, Mosaic works hard to ensure that the people we support in the United States and around the world are upheld as valuable and integral members of our communities. As a faith-based organization we cling tightly to the belief that people with disabilities are seen as beloved and valued in the eyes of God.

We cling even tighter to that belief today.

Please join Mosaic in expressing prayers and support for the families of the victims, those who were injured, both physically and emotionally, the staff of and people supported by the Tsukui Yamayuri En (Tsukui Lily Garden) facility, Tokyo, the disability community and our world:

Out of the darkness we cry to you, O God. Enable us to find in Christ the faith to trust your care even in the midst of pain. Surround the community in Japan with your steadfast love. Assure us that we do not walk alone through the valley of the shadow, but that your light is leading us into life. In your name we pray, Amen.

Its with great sorrow I read of the attack on disabled people in Japan. The world still needs to be educated about disability. If this can happen in Japan one can imagine their plight in other countries. We need to do what we can from our own Areas first. My prayers for those killed in Japan. May God bless the work of Mosaic wherever it works.
