What Does It Mean to be a Faith-Based Organization?

Mosaic is a faith-based organization.

What does that mean?

If you ask 10 Mosaic employees what it means, you’d probably receive 10 different answers.

(If you ask me on 10 different days, you might get 10 different answers!)

It starts with our heritage and why we do what we do. We were founded by Lutheran pastors and lay people who felt the call to serve. If you’re part of a faith group, you’ll understand “call.” It’s that interior voice, coming from deep within, yet not from us but from God.

That sense of call still drives many of our employees today. It drives me.

For some of our employees, though, faith-based isn’t so much about faith in God as it is about faith in one another and in the people we serve.

Working at Mosaic, we have the privilege of working with and serving some really good people. I’ve seen people who don’t identify as Christian – or even as believers – who radiate compassion and kindness. When you work with them, you feel renewed. When you watch them, you see God’s hand at work.

I believe whenever we respond to what is deepest and truest in us as human beings, we are acting as God made us to act. That is when we create community. That is when we give and receive love. That is when our better souls rise to the surface and ordinary things become extraordinary.

That happens daily at Mosaic.

That’s why we can move Forward in Faith. This mission has attracted many good people, believers and non-believers, employees, donors, family members and volunteers. They’re here because they want to do good for others, whatever inner drive moves them.
