Colorado Springs "Lends a Hand" at Springs Spree

Giant canvases covered with colorful handprints of all sizes were found at Springs Spree, an annual community festival with music, food, and vendor displays held at Memorial Park. Mosaic partnered with this major event to encourage people to "Lend a Hand to Someone with a Disability" by inviting attendees to leave a hand print on one of the four 54" x 54" canvases.

"The canvasas were a really cool community thing to do," direct support associate Regina Carpenter said. Carpenter helped deliver information about Mosaic to the crowds stopping at Mosaic's two locations. The multi-colored art with overlapping handprints will be donated to several sites around Colorado Springs.

Many people in Mosaic's service, their families, employees, and friends of the agency came out to support the activity. Large round stickers with a blue handprint, Mosaic logo, and the message "I Lent a Hand Today" were given to all participants. Donations were also collected, which totaled about $700.

"I loved that we got to introduce ourselves to so many people who were so receptive to learn more about us," vocational direct support coordinator Christine Gardner said. "I was surprised that so many people wanted to participate!"

Besides having lines of people wanting to "lend a hand," the local newspaper and television station were also interested in sharing Mosaic's mission with the city.

"Mosaic in Colorado Springs is making strides in creating a community presence and social capital," executive director Mark Wester said. "Our hope is we raised people's awareness of those with disabilities."

Materials for the project were funded by Northeast Chiropractic Center, which is a major advocate of Mosaic's mission.

Mosaic partnered with one of the largest community events in Colorado Springs!

Everyone was invited to help create a community mosaic by placing their handprint on a large canvas. The finished artwork will be donated to the city!
