2009 Employee Spotlight on HABS Julie Cirrito, Desiree Diogostine, Darby Biddle, Kim Turbak, and Malinda Santiago

In our first column we decided to showcase a vital position within Mosaic that assists in overseeing the direct care of each individual living within one of our 21 residential group homes.

This is the five very dedicated Habilitative Coordinators also known as "HABS" in our agency.

Since the name of position or even their job description really does not clearly define their role, importance or what the job entails on a daily basis we delve deeper. On the surface, the role of the "HABS" consists of supervising the on-site Program Coordinators in each of their assigned homes, overseeing all aspects of lives of the 20 people within their caseloads, ensuring the home meets all state and Mosaic guidelines for safety and comfort, reporting on each individuals care, and advocating for each person so they may achieve their goals. They are viewed as the glue that keeps the care and the needs of each person's life up-to-date and met.

When the HABS were asked what is the best part of their position they all replied "the relationships they make with their clients and families, advocating for each of them, being an integral part of their lives."

Each individual in service has an annual Individual Plan assessment for their care, services, medications, meal plans and each person in service is interviewed to find out their Personal Outcome Measures (POM) to uncover their goals and dreams both annual plans conducted and reported by their Habilitative Coordinator assigned to them. It really creates a personal bond and commitment on the part of the HABS and a trusting friend to our residents.

This position requires them to wear many hats and have tremendous time management. When asked what is one of the challenges of the position all five HABS stated "Time" and not having enough. They must attend many meetings, make daily visits to the homes, conduct training courses, document and maintain all records for the homes and for each individual in their case load, help develop new policies, procedures and methodologies for delivering high quality services to each individual in service and so much more. Each one of our wonderful HABS are creative thinkers, dedicated, hard-working, resourceful, caring and go above and beyond for Mosaic and the people we serve.

Thank you to our HABS for all that they do!
