About Mosaic in Omaha

Mosaic provides a life of possibilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. We help people define their own happiness. We support them and empower the pursuit of their goals. We celebrate their successes, even if that success is as simple as the pursuit itself.

Mosaic in Omaha was created in July 2003 with the merger between Martin Luther Homes and Bethphage. Both organizations had a strong presence in this community, building on their century-long commitment to services for people with disabilities in Nebraska. More than 250 people are currently served in Omaha making Mosaic one of the largest providers in the metropolitan area and making Omaha one of the largest Mosaic agencies in the country.

Father and Son Make a Successful Team

#

Shane Simonson has an often-used and welcoming smile. Struggling to speak loudly enough to be heard, his staff member, Stephanie Abbott, reminds him to "take a deep breath and use your big voice."

Simonson has received services from Mosaic since 1993. Several years earlier, at age 14, he was in a car accident that left him with multiple disabilities. His father, Don Simonson, said that Shane was near death in a coma after the accident and nearly died twice in the hospital.

"I'm sure God has a plan," the father said of his son's life, which 23 years after the accident is still filled with several hours each week of speech and physical therapy.

Although he knows he could not alone provide the assistance his son needs every day, Don Simonson is a devoted father, spending hours with his son several times a week, including regular walks in the park or a mall, and weekly participation in the Spirit Matters group at Rejoice! Lutheran Church.

Community Involvement

#
The Kiwanis Club of Omaha Inc. has partnered with Mosaic in Omaha to start an AKTION Club. An AKTION Club is a community-service group for adult citizens living with disabilities. The mission of AKTION Club is to provide adults with disabilities an opportunity to develop initiative and leadership, to serve their community, to be integrated into society, and to demonstrate the dignity and value of citizens living with disabilities.

AKTION Club members meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, 15005 Q Street. If you are interested in joining or volunteering, contact us.

Read about the Aktion Club Charter event in the January 2010 edition of metroMagazine.

Become an advocate

More than 95 percent of the funds Mosaic receives for the services provided to people with intellectual disabilities come through Medicaid. During the last two years, many Mosaic locations have faced funding cuts of up to 10 percent.

Become a part of Mosaic Allied Voices (MAV), a volunteer group that works with Mosaic's Governmental Affairs Office. As a MAV volunteer, you become a "first responder" to let elected officials at local, state, and national levels know the needs and rights of people with intellectual disabilities cannot be set aside.

It's easy to do.  Visit the MAV website to learn more and sign up. You can also invite others by sharing the website or this brochure.

Become a Mosaic Allied Voices volunteer and help create a life of possibilities for people with intellectual disabilities.
