When growing up I remember my neighbor was different. At that time I didn't know what was wrong with her. Later I found out that she had a developmental disability. As kids we use to play together and ride bikes. She went to different schools and was always involved with Special Olympics and always made it a point to show me her medals that she received. I remember the other kids in the neighborhood use to make fun of her by calling her retarded. I never made fun of her because she was a special friend and I cherished our friendship. The years passed by and we went our separate way, she got married and had a baby and I got married and moved into my own house. I would see on every once in a while. In 2008 I came into the Host Home program with Mosaic, one of the families on my case load, was the girl I grew up with was one of the individuals that was receiving services through Mosaic. So now, I get see her on a regular basis, I get to help her with what she needs and we continue to be the best of friends.
Everyone I talk with always talks good about Mosaic. Mosaic has a wonderful reputation and they believe in what they stand for. I believe in what Mosaic stands for.I have been with Mosaic for 12 years as of November 2010 and have learned to be patient and understanding recognizing we are all different.
Being in this field has its up and down but you have to be sympathetic to the families that are caring for these children and adults that have a developmental disability because my job is to help provide the best quality of care that will help fulfill people's lives.
Working at Mosaic has changed my life; I'm giving something back in a big way by making a difference in many people's lives. My 12 years at Mosaic has made me look at things differently and I am truly a better person for it.
