Back in 1986, Terry was living at the Denton State School where he enjoyed his life and job in the greenhouse. When school officials began to talk about community living and employment options, however, Terry mentioned that he would like to live in Dallas to be closer to his family. He has lived in one of Mosaic's Richardson group homes ever since.
"Never in a million years would I have dreamed that he would be this successful, independent, and have been able to hold down the same job at Albertson's for more than eight years," said Billie Oxford, Terry's mother. "I am so proud of Terry, and at times I could almost cry at what he has accomplished over the years."
She is pleased that her son has his own room in a home he shares with five housemates and feels that he is well taken care of. Every other weekend he goes to his parents' home for a visit. The family's home church recently began a small group for Sunday School to meet Terry's needs and he has participated in the worship as well.
"I was so proud to see him lighting the candles and being a part of our congregation and welcomed at the church," Oxford said. She added that he was not at all nervous because he had practiced his role. "I like introducing people to Terry, as he likes to meet them and he remembers everyone he meets. He cares about them and once he meets someone he never forgets a name."
For her son's future, Oxford has confidence in Mosaic.
"I am proud to be a part of Mosaic," she said. "I know that when I am no longer around Terry will be well taken care of with Mosaic's services and support, and he will continue to accomplish great things."
