The Waukon agency of Mosaic opened as Martin Luther Homes in 1986. Since that time the agency has grown to serve 19 adults with developmental disabilities at four sites in Waukon and Decorah. The agency is accredited by The Council on Quality & Leadership, CQL, through February 2012.

Sarah's Success Story

#
Sarah on the porch of her new home

In May of 2006, Mosaic met with three adults and their families, about a new duplex that was being built by Habitat for Humanity, to be a home for persons with disabilities in Decorah, Iowa. The interested parties interviewed several agencies and chose Mosaic to be the the service provider at the home, and it officially opened on August 1, 2006.

One of the people living in the duplex is Sarah Olson. Sarah is a young woman making great strides to become as independent as she can be. She shares her home with two gentlemen who live on the opposite side of the duplex. She is eager to have a female housemate move into the empty bedroom on her side of the duplex. She says the best thing about her new home is "my friends next door."

Sarah enjoys inviting friends to her home, going to church, bowling, cooking, and watching TV. She also enjoys a pool table which was donated by one of the Mosaic employees who supports Sarah in her home.

Nancy Olson, Sarah's mother, states that "Sarah likes her home. It's a comfortable place to live, and she has a good relationship with staff working there."

For several years, Sarah dreamed of working in a more independent setting. In October, she fulfilled that dream when she began working as a housekeeper for a local motel. She now works there three days per week, and has been excited about learning all the facets of her new job. She was also thrilled to receive a $5 tip recently, for a job well done!

Sarah has also been learning skills in other areas, such as scheduling taxi rides to and from work, making her own appointments in the community, using a computer for household and leisure purposes, and managing her finances.

Sarah has made great increases in her independence, reaching goals she set for herself. We are proud of Sarah and her accomplishments.

New Residence

In the fall of 2008, construction began on a new HUD Section 811 apartment building. The apartments will serve adults in one or two bedroom units. The apartments will be fully-accessible, and will be located in a residential section of Waukon, near the public library and new Wellness Center. Anyone interested in being on the waiting list for these apartments should contact Mosaic in Waukon.

Host Home

Host Home is a new service that Mosaic plans to offer in northeast Iowa. It matches an adult with disabilities, with a host family who provides residential services in their own home and community. To learn more about this exciting option, please call Mosaic for the scoop!
