Executive Director Liz Jones

Letter from the Executive Director

Heat! Drought! The summer has certainly been challenging for us in Texas, in many ways. We have been faced with state budget cuts and threats of further federal budget cuts. It makes you realize that our "drought conditions" speak of more than just a water shortage! The good news? Mosaic is alive and well and has implemented a strategic plan that will assure we continue to provide excellent supports for the people who have chosen our services. Here in San Angelo, in spite of budget cuts, our committed staff work diligently to assure that the folks we support can continue to live a life of possibilities.

During the month of July, we conducted our semi-annual Basic Assurances Self-Assessment which was validated by our Mosaic regional Operational Excellence Director. We are very pleased to share that we were validated at 100 percent compliance with the Basic Assurances during this self-assessment. This measure of quality looks at all of our best practice systems to assure we continue to operate with excellence. We will repeat this process next January and would love to have anyone who is interested assist us with our self-assessment. It is a great way to get to know more about the agency. Give me a call if you would like to participate with us on the next go-round!

Mosaic TRAILS (Therapeutic Riding for the Achievement of Individual Life Success) began fall afternoon classes on Sept. 26. We do need additional volunteers for the TRAILS program. If you can spare a couple hours a week, or if you know someone who would be able to help out, please contact Terri Holland at our offices. In addition to volunteer training, we will hold additional training sessions on other occasions throughout the fall session for folks who are unable to come to the September training but who still want to help. This really is very rewarding work. Try it!

Mosaic group homes benefit from local Girl Scouts troop

Mosaic's group homes have been selected by local Girl Scout Troop #5246 to work toward their Silver Award. So far, a trio of girl scouts in San Angelo spruced up, cleaned up and built a garden box for the ladies who reside in Mosaic's Shady Hill Group Home. Over the summer, they pruned bushes and raked leaves in the front and back yards, sanded and painted a picnic table, and built and filled an outdoor raised garden bed for the Mosaic individuals to enjoy. Additionally, the scouts gain leadership skills for their award by motivating the residents to keep their yard clean by creating a task chart. Christinia Ramirez, Troop Leader, said "The girls worked hard at each stage of planning, and working on this project. And they enjoyed doing it." It is a win-win situation for the girls and the individuals Mosaic supports.

More Mosaic group homes are on the agenda as more scouts plan and work toward the Silver Award.

Carino's fundraiser a success for Mosaic

On Aug. 16, our local Carino's held a benefit for Mosaic. Carino's donated 10 percent of their proceeds that day from 11 a.m. to closing to Mosaic. We had a record crowd at lunch and people were waiting to get a table. It was a great event and we appreciate Carino's supporting us. Along with public service announcements that they did the weeks leading up to the event, our local radio stations, KGKL and Kickin' Country did live remote broadcasts during the lunch hour and helped us bring in even more customers.

The event brought in $450 of proceeds to go to Mosaic and a check was presented by Scott Reis, Manager of Carino's.

Mosaic Project Teddy Bear Scholarship awarded

On July 26, Mosaic awarded the first Project Teddy Bear Scholarship to Emily Heller. Emily is 3 years old and is the daughter of Shalena Heller. The Project Teddy Bear Scholarship Endowment Fund is for families of a child with special needs who needs tuition assistance to the Mosaic Redwine Childcare Center. The endowment is held at the San Angelo Area Foundation and was partially funded by the San Angelo Health Foundation in 2009 by a $100,000 matching grant. As Mosaic celebrates 25 years of service in San Angelo, it is fitting to award the first scholarship to a deserving recipient. Emily has a diagnosis of absence of the corpus collossum/septum pallucidum and Gastroschisis.

Emily lives with her mother and younger brother in San Angelo, where her mother is a nursing student at Howard College.
