Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

In the Christmas story about the birth of Jesus, Joseph is told in a dream that he should not fear taking Mary as his wife because “what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (NIV Matthew 1:20).

It is easy to see ourselves in Joseph’s position. His engagement to Mary was not playing out as he had imagined it would. Yet—lucky guy—Joseph has an angel come to him in a dream and reassure him that all will be well.

How often don’t we wonder about events in our lives, whether it is the right thing, whether it the best thing; what should we do? I face those questions in my personal and my professional life. But I haven’t had an angel appear to give me guidance (at least not yet!).

I do, however, have something else that I stand firmly upon. I believe the mission of Mosaic was “conceived from the Holy Spirit.” I believe that our founders were acting on a call from God to love and to serve. I believe that if I choose to love and to serve, I am following in their footsteps and acting upon the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Often, things don’t go as I had imagined. And sometimes they become more than I could have imagined. Either way, it is OK because the gift of Christmas is the gift of Immanuel, “God with us.” We do not walk alone.

In our work at Mosaic, we walk with people through their lives. We’re there in the celebrations and in the sad times. We’re there in the joy and the grief. We’re there, loving and serving. We’re there, in the image of Jesus, letting people know they are not alone. And, in turn, we are reminded ourselves – God is with us.

I cannot imagine anything more satisfying.

This time of year we receive many gifts to support Mosaic’s mission. I am grateful for all the people who share in this mission as donors and volunteers. They, too, are a reminder that we are not alone in our work.

As you celebrate the gift of “God with us” this Christmas, remember to share that gift with someone else who needs to be reminded they are not alone. And may you have dreams that inspire you!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
