National Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Through the Years

In 1987, when President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation declaring March “National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month,” he wrote:

“I urge all Americans to join me in according to our fellow citizens with such disabilities both encouragement and the opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.”

The proclamation was one of the first formal recognitions that our country can and needs to do a better job of advocating for and protecting people with intellectual disabilities.

Just three years later, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law, leading to widespread changes.

Even though this proclamation and the ADA had many positive effects, much remains to be done to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities are included as valued and important members of our communities.
