Mosaic Expresses Concern Over Tax Reform Bill, Encourages Citizens to Contact Congress
Early this morning the US Senate passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a bill that could drastically impact Medicaid, the main funding stream for services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Medicaid is a lifeline for millions of people with disabilities, including the 3,700 people Mosaic supports in 10 states. It provides care that is essential for their livelihood.
Medicaid would be indirectly impacted by the House and Senate legislation, which increases the deficit by nearly $1.5 trillion. Medicaid funding will likely be reduced to decrease the deficit, as adopted by the congressional budget resolution.
While Mosaic remains neutral on the tax provisions, Mosaic and its advocacy partners have key positions on how tax reform may impact services for people with disabilities. Given this, it is critical to voice the importance of Medicaid to people with I/DD before Congress votes on this legislation.
Since there are differences between the House and the Senate bills, it will go back to House of Representatives for consideration, with a potential vote in the House as early as Monday, Dec. 4.
