Dr. Smith and Stephen

Mosaic in Colorado Springs

When I applied for the Executive Director position at Mosaic in Colorado in 2013, Dr. Ron Smith was on the interview panel.

I remember him asking me hard questions throughout that process. I must have impressed him with my responses because at the end of the interview he told my future supervisor that she needed to hire me! I will never forget that day. I met a man who was dedicated to his son and wanting the very best for Stephen.

Dr. Smith was someone I grew to admire and found myself excited to share updates about the agency with him. He held me accountable and asked difficult questions to make sure all aspects of situations were explored. We had high trust and faith in each other. He had compassion, resilience and a wonderful sense of humor.

Dr. Smith’s love for his son was evident in all his actions. You could see the pure joy on Stephen’s face when Dr. Smith would walk in the room.

Sadly, on May 24, 2017, Dr. Smith passed away. This was a difficult day for all who had the pleasure of knowing him. I miss Dr. Smith. I miss his questions. I miss his smile. I miss giving him updates on our agency goals.

On Nov. 28, 2017, Dr. Smith’s son, Stephen, passed away. Stephen was 51 years old, and we had served him for over 40 years. This was another difficult day. I find comfort knowing that Dr. Smith was there to greet him in heaven and welcome him to the next life with open arms. They are finally together again. Stephen had such a full life, and he brought incredible joy to all who knew him.

We were honored and blessed to have known Dr. Smith and Stephen. They taught us all so much about humility, grace, compassion, laughter and love.
