The relationship with the Church is Mosaic’s foundation; it’s where we started more than 100 years ago, and it’s where we continue to grow. First Presbyterian Church in Pontiac is a great example, showing the vital need a church fills. When we first met Pastor Canessa Lagan, she said we were welcome to use their building. We have been able to do this for meetings, an Employee Campaign Breakfast and a miniconcert at which we were presented a gift from Alpha Mu Chapter, a group of retired women educators.

Remember when you went to day camp? There was excitement of days planned with friends, food and nature.

A group of almost 30 people, plus staff and volunteers had the chance to participate and have some fun during day camp, thanks to Livingston County Mental Health Board who provided all the funding needed for the people at Mosaic go this year. They had three days of camping at the Timber Pointe Center run by Easter Seals.

For Donald Doughty, a person served by Mosaic who everyone calls DJ, getting his driver’s license is a big deal. When DJ was asked:  “What might someone be surprised to know about you?”  He immediately replied, “I love to work. It gives me money. I love the ‘green stuff.’”

Artists from the Pontiac Community Art Center enjoyed working with individuals served at five Mosaic houses in Pontiac and Dwight during the week of June 12.

Each student painted an original work of art inspired by one of four sample paintings supplied by lead artist Kathy Zehr and Teresa Beard-Lowell.

Zehr and Beard-Lowell led the projects with the help from volunteers: Connie Kostelc, Vickie Fitzgerald, Juli Fraher, Patty Mackinson, Brenda Thompson, Pam Beeson, Sue Drummet, and Nancy Flessner.

Volunteers are worth their weight in gold. They share their time and talents without any compensation. There is enormous value in volunteering. It demonstrates a commitment to the community and a willingness to work for the betterment of others.

Here are a couple examples of what some of our volunteers are doing  for Mosaic.

"I think of her as a queen.”

That’s how Direct Support Professional Anarae Harpenau describes Rena Sims, who receives services from Mosaic. Unfortunately, Rena was not treated like royalty when it came to the red tape and long wait time for a communication device, something she needs to help her communicate.

April 1, Mosaic in Pontiac held its fourth annual Partners in Possibilities fundraising luncheon. We had a beautiful day at the Eagle Performing Arts and Conference Center in Pontiac. The newly renovated Eagle first opened in December of 1939 as a movie house. Its first movie was “The Wizard of Oz.”
