One Mosaic Day Celebrates Unified Mission

Since 2020, July 1 is celebrated as One Mosaic Day, commemorating the day in 2003 when Mosaic was formed by the consolidation of Bethphage and Martin Luther Homes. With several other organizations becoming part of Mosaic since that time, One Mosaic Day is now bigger than an anniversary—it is a celebration of a network comprising 12 states, 750 communities and a workforce of nearly 5,000 people all working together with a common purpose: We are called to love and serve.

Across the organization today you’ll find members of the workforce wearing “We’ve got Grit!” T-shirts, this year’s celebration theme. Grit is one of Mosaic’s four values. It is defined as “Mosaic perseveres through times of uncertainty, making bold decisions and nimbly responding to change.” When we hear the word grit, this is what we think about:

  • Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day-in, day-out. Not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years. And working really hard to make that future a reality.
  • To be gritty is to keep putting one foot in front of the other. To be gritty is to hold fast to a purposeful goal. To be gritty is to fall down seven times and rise eight.
  • The people we support show grit every day in pursuing their goals and dreams, and we have always endeavored to match that grit.

Mosaic’s history shows a determined organization that never gives up and finds a way to fulfill our mission regardless of obstacles. Over the decades, the organization has persevered through times of uncertainty, including World Wars I and II with labor shortages and rationing, the Great Depression, pandemics, and other challenges. The mission continued, undaunted.

The current environment offers challenges too, and Mosaic’s grit is fueling advocacy efforts. With industry and Lutheran partners, including our Mosaic Allied Voices advocates, we are putting the needs of the people Mosaic serves regularly in front of Congressional members in the states Mosaic serves. (If you’re not a member of Mosaic Allied Voices, visit the site to sign up. It’s a great way to participate in Mosaic’s mission to love and serve others.)

In 2020, One Mosaic Day began as a way to celebrate and acknowledge the workforce for their commitment—and grit—to continue serving faithfully during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, it’s a good day to acknowledge all who are part of the mission—those served, their families and guardians, the workforce, donors, volunteers, community partners and others. Thank you for sharing this call to love and serve.
