Donor Advised Funds are an Easy Way to Give

Although about 96% of Mosaic’s support services provided through the Mosaic network are funded through Medicaid, Mosaic relies on the generosity of donors to help cover costs that Medicaid does not. To some, that extra financial assistance makes all the difference.

An easy way to give to Mosaic is through a donor-advised fund (DAF). A DAF is a tax-advantaged savings account that anyone can start.

Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are becoming increasingly popular due to their ease of use, efficiency, wide range of giving options, and tax advantages. A DAF gives a person complete control and flexibility over how much and how often funds are granted to qualified charities, such as Mosaic. The people Mosaic supports want to be afforded the same opportunities as anyone else to live a good life.

Donors Julie and Randy Richardson were deeply moved by the positive impact Mosaic had on Julie’s sister, Mary Beth. Since Mary Beth began receiving services, the couple has seen a remarkable improvement in her quality of life.

Motivated by her transformation, they became more involved with Mosaic and gained a personal appreciation for the organization’s mission to relentlessly pursue opportunities that empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other diverse needs. Through their involvement, they saw how charitable donations allow Mosaic to do more for the people it supports, like Mary Beth.

“Donor contributions allow Mosaic to provide a broader reach of services that may not be available to people otherwise,” they said. “It’s often simple things, like a new winter coat, shoes, going to a state fair or going out for dinner. Every dollar goes to taking care of the individuals Mosaic supports.”

The Richardsons, who have been donors to Mosaic for years, established a donor-advised fund several years ago, and now choose to donate to Mosaic through that fund. To establish their donor-advised fund, Julie and Randy worked with their financial advisor. By donating to their fund, they can receive tax deductions in an individual tax year and then distribute to organizations over multiple years. They recommend donor-advised funds as an efficient way of giving to organizations, like Mosaic, that are close to their hearts.

“Once the fund is established, it’s very easy and convenient to direct your charitable giving,” they said
