Changing the World, One Step at a Time
Friends, compatriots, teammates, buddies.
We all rely on others to be successful. Every one of us.
I am an Eagle Scout, and growing up as a Scout I became very familiar with the buddy system, which is the cooperative practice of pairing two or more people together for mutual assistance or safety.
If we went hiking, swimming or gathering firewood, we were to have a buddy.
The buddy system is also great when you’re out advocating.
If you go advocate to your elected official about an initiative or attend a rally at the capitol, take a buddy. A person to have your back, to make your voice louder, and to share in the experience.
Mosaic has buddies.
We partner with the American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) and Lutheran Services in America- Disability Network (LSA-DN) to positively impact the lives of people with disabilities through our collective advocacy efforts.
Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
The Americans with Disabilities Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, and the Achieving a Better Life Experience Act became realities because people with disabilities had buddies to help make their voices heard.
I encourage you to grab a buddy and visit www.mosaicinfo.org to find out more about positively influencing issues impacting people with intellectual disabilities.
