Soreo, a Service of Mosaic, Helps People Stay Healthy, Independent and Part of a Community

Nearly 10 years ago, Mosaic listed Connection as one of our four values. At the time, we got more than a few quizzical looks when we shared that value.

But in the last decade, the rest of the world seems to be catching on.

There is a growing consensus showing that connections in people’s lives make a huge difference in their mental and physical health.

I’ve read headlines that call loneliness an epidemic and say it’s a bigger health risk than smoking or obesity. Insurance companies are seeing additional healthcare costs due to loneliness. Medical doctors are starting to ask questions about your relationships when you go in for a check-up. And across the Atlantic in England, there’s even a group called the Campaign to End Loneliness.

Those are all good signs that healthcare is moving in the right direction. Mosaic, from the founding of our organization more than 106 years ago, has always worked to build community for marginalized people.

As you might imagine, the risk of loneliness grows in old age. Last year, Mosaic acquired Soreo, which provides in-home supports to seniors and others. The vision aligned perfectly with Mosaic: connect with people and help them remain as healthy and independent as possible.

At the heart of Soreo are caring people who make those connections with seniors and help them stay connected to the world around them.

The in-home supports include a wide spectrum of personal care, companionship, light housekeeping, rides to the doctor and shopping, and more.

Through the acquisition, the number of seniors served by Mosaic increased dramatically, from about 1% to nearly 15% of the more than 4,500 people we support. More importantly, it offered another way for Mosaic to realize our simple purpose: we are called to love and serve.

One of the people served by Soreo is Tina Dixon. Visit Tina and two things are certain: you’ll get a hug and some candy, and you will be enchanted by her smile. We made a short video featuring Tina and one of her direct care workers to help people see what Soreo offers.

Mosaic recently revised our list of values. With acquisitions like Soreo and Mosaic’s ongoing focus on building community, it is not surprising that Connection remained as one of them.

What’s been true for 106 years will remain true in the future.
