Empowering People in Iowa
Real life. Real possibilities.
Empowering People in Iowa
By Carol Mau
Vice President of Operations, Iowa
Whether you’re deeply connected to Mosaic or new to our caring community, I’d like to take this opportunity to reintroduce you to our mission.
Embracing God’s call, Mosaic relentlessly pursues opportunities that empower people.
Relentlessly pursuing opportunities has led Mosaic to provide a wide spectrum of services for people throughout our 106-year history, and we have no plans of stopping this pursuit any time soon.
As the vice president of operations over the state, I hope to use this statewide newsletter to share updates on the opportunities we are pursuing at Mosaic and stories of the people we’ve empowered.
Thanks to you – our donors, partners, family and friends – people in 56 communities right here in Iowa are empowered to live more satisfying lives and experience as much independence as they choose.
A few highlights include:
- Continued growth and support for our Mosaic at Home program. This host home model has been transformational for both people who choose it and the communities that support them.
- Our Western Iowa location continues to serve and support people who live with chronic mental illness in Council Bluffs. We’re committed to working with the state and elected officials to ensure this vital program continues.
- While the transition to managed care (the private system that Iowa now uses to manage the services we provide to people in need) continues to be difficult, we are committed to working with the state to ensure that people who receive Medicaid services receive absolutely the best care possible.
- Thanks to a generous grant from the Immanuel Vision Foundation, we’ve been able to ensure that 250 people go through an advocacy training created just for them. This allows them to voice their concerns and needs with elected officials directly.
While much has changed in the healthcare landscape in the last five years, our commitment to the people we support in the state of Iowa remains.
We will continue to provide new services and options to empower the more than 531 people we support.
We do this by:
- Building partnerships with community organizations and churches that welcome the people we support to participate.
- Collaborating with employers to help the people we serve find work opportunities.
- Advocating with government officials and regulators to make sure people’s rights are protected and to ensure that life-saving services are appropriately funded.
- Friend and fundraising to help bridge the gap between what’s funded and what it takes to live a meaningful life.
It takes faithfulness, grit and a community of people connecting with each other to make sure all can belong. Thank you for making possibilities a reality in Iowa!

DSPs: The Real Deal
Some days are tough – that’s real life – but our DSPs are authentic, they stay grounded, and they bring a lot of heart every day, providing real possibilities to people. Join Mosaic during DSP Recognition Week, Sept. 8-14, as we thank our DSPs for supporting real life.
